MERCKHOFFULLY YOURS  –  M F Y

After more than 30 years of work, I still have the same boundless passion for graphic shapes, lines, structures, textures… for visual communication. It’s something that’s always running in the background of my mind, quietly shaping the way I see the world.

One of my earliest and strongest memories of these fascinations is when I “borrowed” my big brother’s Spirograph gears. It felt like… magic!

After my student years in Lund, Stockholm, and London, and many years working as a visual communicator, the desire to explore new ways of communicating grew stronger and stronger. M F Y began to take shape… and that was in 2021.

Sketching and creating prototypes opened the door to fusion/melt technologies and 3D printing. But it quickly became clear just how many advantages the main material, PLA*, offered — especially one key benefit for earrings: its extremely light weight.

Even the largest earrings feel weightless on the earlobe.

Combined with the ability to offer a wide range of colors and, of course, the material’s sustainability, the (somewhat surprising) decision was made: the prototype tool would also become the final production tool.

Today, driven by an endless curiosity and an experimental urge to explore the possibilities of this fascinating material, development continues toward more abstract shapes alongside familiar, graphic ones.

Everything is designed, produced, and assembled by hand in the studio in Stockholm’s Old Town, Sweden. Each piece is individually crafted using melt and/or laser technology.

Welcome to the M F Y-world

*) PLA (polylactic acid) is made from renewable resources, such as corn starch or sugarcane — materials that would otherwise go to waste. I see this material as a material of the future. It lets me explore volume and form in ways that simply aren’t possible with, for example, metal. Read more in the slideshow below;
